Your wedding ceremony isn’t just the start of your married life — it’s a moment to pause, connect, and celebrate everything that makes your love story one of a kind.
But what if you want your ceremony to feel less… scripted? Less formal? More personal, more you?
That’s where ceremony rituals come in — small symbolic acts that add depth, heart, and creativity to your vows. Whether you’re sentimental, spiritual, or just love the idea of doing something a bit different, these meaningful rituals can help you create a ceremony that feels unforgettable — for all the right reasons. Here are some ideas to inspire you.
Handfasting: Tie the Knot, Literally
This ancient Celtic ritual involves gently binding your hands together with ribbons or cords to symbolise your connection. Each loop or knot can represent a promise — loyalty, laughter, courage, or whatever you want to bring into your marriage. Handfasting adds a beautiful visual element to your ceremony and a moment of quiet, intentional connection. Plus, it’s a nod to the original “tying the knot” — and it photographs beautifully.
Ring Warming: A Circle of Love and Support
In a ring warming ceremony, your wedding rings are passed around your guests before the exchange — giving everyone a moment to hold them and offer a silent wish or blessing. By the time you place them on each other’s fingers, they’re filled with love and support from everyone in the room. A gentle way to include your guests — especially if you're having a smaller or more intimate ceremony.
Tree Planting: Growing Something Together
If you’re planning an outdoor or countryside wedding, a tree planting ceremony is a gorgeous way to symbolise the love you’re growing and the roots you’re putting down together. You can involve children, friends or family too — and the tree becomes a living, growing reminder of your promises long after the confetti’s cleared.
Love Letter Box: A Keepsake for the Future
Write letters to each other in the lead-up to your wedding — sharing your hopes, memories, or private thoughts. Then, during the ceremony, seal them in a box to be opened on a milestone anniversary… or a future day when you need a little reminder of your “why”. This one’s quiet, personal, and full of emotion. (Tissues at the ready.)
Sand or Water Ceremonies: Visual, Symbolic, Beautiful
A sand ceremony involves pouring different coloured sands into a shared vessel — creating layers that can never be separated, just like your lives. A water ceremony works similarly, using coloured water instead — perfect if you love the symbolism of flowing together emotionally and spiritually. These are especially lovely for involving children or blending families.
Wine or Cocktail Rituals: Cheers to the Good Stuff
This one’s fun and full of personality. You each take a sip from a shared glass — often wine, but it could just as easily be your signature cocktail (especially if you’ve created one for your wedding). It’s a toast to the life you’ll share — with all its sweetness, richness, and maybe a hint of spice.
Love Locks: Symbolic and Visual
In this romantic ritual, you each lock a padlock as you say your vows — sealing your promises for life. You could keep the keys, throw them away, or give them to someone special. A lovely symbolic moment with a modern twist — and something tangible to take home.
Oathing Stones: Set Your Vows in Stone
Rooted in old Scottish tradition, this ritual involves holding or placing your hands on a stone as you say your vows — grounding your promises in something solid and enduring. You can have a personalised stone engraved, or invite guests to hold small stones during your vows and place them in a bowl or vessel afterwards as a collective blessing.
Tea Ceremony: A Nod to Heritage and Gratitude
Adapted from a beautiful Chinese tradition, a tea ceremony allows you to honour your families by serving them tea during the ceremony. It’s a thoughtful and respectful way to include your parents or elders — and brings a moment of calm and connection to the day.
Jumping the Broom: Stepping Into the Future
This joyful ritual — with roots in African and African-American history — symbolises sweeping away the past and jumping into a new life together. It’s full of energy and symbolism, and often comes at the very end of the ceremony. Expect applause, laughter, and a moment you’ll remember forever.
The Final Word? Make It Yours
You don’t have to include any rituals at all — but if something speaks to you, let’s make it happen. That might be a nod to your heritage, a way to involve your children or pets, or just something a little different that adds warmth, humour, or heart. Whatever we choose, I’ll make sure it fits beautifully into your story-led, relaxed, and deeply personal ceremony. Because your wedding day should reflect the two of you.
